Carved in stone

A huge bird here seems carved in stone
spreading its wings to fly,
whose tips, however, held alone
in stone – no reason why.

Others say your fantasy
blossoms far too wide.
Such a bird could never be
and not held at its side.

Reality is more profane,
the rock crumbled in places
that by erosive powers’ lane
gave the rock its faces.
