An olive tree can grow quite old
and in its time endure
some periods of hot and cold
and storm and rain for sure.
No wonder when you chop the tree
that grew too old to sprout,
wounds and scars are lots to see
although its stem seemed stout.
Cutting a slice of such a stem
and polishing it fine
makes it shine like a pure gem,
forget the tree’s decline.
