Socks usually come in pairs
at least when they are new.
After a time, though, you have spares
where formerly were two.
Washing machines are said to eat
only one sock per wash.
But surely they would soon defeat
the socks they have to squash.
Maybe a missing sock does hide
under the bed, who knows?
Or as a ball sticks in the side
detected by your nose.
In any case these woolen socks
keep warm when you have two.
And nobody can say it shocks
that you have one per shoe.
