Shanties

A shanty is the song to sing
when thinking of the sea.
Its memories don’t cease to cling
wherever you might be.

A sailor can’t escape the grip
of smell and sound and sense
of power on the ocean’s trip
that rattles the expanse.

The more you had to fight the waves
the more you love the calm
when suddenly the world behaves
and shanties are a balm.
