Tunnels are three-dimensional but
their size is always restricted,
mostly because they have to be cut
through the ground as clearly depicted.
Sometimes a tunnel is drilled under water
like the Channel Tunnel for trains.
In modern times it’s no workers‘ slaughter,
but takes big machines and big brains.
This way man does indeed subjugate
the earth, even drilling through rock.
He tunnels the Alps, so we don’t have to wait
to pass through and can go round the clock.
There remains, however, a shred of fear
if all our plans can succeed.
