When recollections of the past disperse
and pictures lose their vivid force,
this seems to mankind like a curse,
which is why we look for the source.
Losing one’s memory is hard
but shows us that we gain in age,
by which we win other’s regard
who still are fighting on the stage.
And yet another benefit
from forgetting things that passed:
unpleasant souvenirs do split,
but pleasures partially last.
